The Federal Government has declared Tuesday, August 25, 2026, a public holiday in commemoration of this year’s Eid ul Mawlid, marking the birth of the Holy Prophet Muhammad.
The declaration was announced by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, in a statement issued on Friday by the Ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Dr. Magdalene Ajani. The minister extended warm felicitations to Muslims across Nigeria and in the diaspora, wishing them a peaceful and meaningful celebration.

Tunji-Ojo urged Nigerians to use the occasion as an opportunity to reflect on the enduring virtues associated with the life and teachings of Prophet Muhammad, particularly compassion, humility, kindness and service to humanity. He noted that these values remain highly relevant to the nation, especially at a time when unity, tolerance and mutual understanding are needed.

The minister also called on Nigerians to dedicate the celebration to prayers for peace, national unity and greater cohesion, stressing that building and sustaining a peaceful nation is a responsibility shared by all citizens. He encouraged Nigerians to celebrate responsibly, peacefully and with respect for one another.

While wishing the Muslim faithful a joyous and fulfilling Eid ul Mawlid, the Minister reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to protecting lives and property and promoting peace and stability across the country.
